New EditShare Customer Profile: Performance Post

Sunday, January 27, 2008

Performance Post is a Los Angeles post production facility with a Hollywood reputation. They do a lot of finishing work for television syndication and have a fast-growing business in "repurposing" films for television and new media.

The repurposed projects need reformatting, re-editing, time alteration and other work to meet the editorial and technical constraints of the various distribution media. With volume approaching a thousand titles a year, Performance Post owner Fausto Sanchez needed to find a better way to maximize his resources.

Prior to the EditShare installation, Performance Post had a stable of six Avid systems - each with their own storage. Sanchez explained, "The film-to-TV workflow involves some highly technical work that can only be performed in specially-equipped studios. Not every studio has all the necessary equipment, so having storage limited to one room was extremely inefficient. It was a nightmare trying to schedule and juggle all the jobs." Sanchez needed a centralized storage system that would allow true editing collaboration in order to meet the delivery deadlines of the increasing number of projects.

Sanchez evaluated several systems before selecting an EditShare 5RU unit with 8TB of storage. EditShare systems are Networked Attached Storage (NAS) devices that are highly optimized for video editing - both in their hardware and their software. Sanchez was particularly impressed by the fact that unlike many SANs, which require expensive Fibre Channel cards and switches, all EditShare systems use a standard 1 Gigabit Ethernet network for connectivity. Anticipating increased workloads involving high bandwidth, uncompressed HD streams, Sanchez implemented EditShare's 10 Gigabit Ethernet network option for his system. Speed and collaboration were his primary considerations. EditShare allows file level sharing so that all connected workstations can capture, access and share in real-time a common pool of media files. Regardless of application or platform, source material, work in progress and finished packages are shared and instantly available to all users on the EditShare network

EditShare's ability to seamlessly work with various generations of Avid products was a key reason for selecting the system. Sanchez says, "It's effortless - you log on, select and mount your project, and just move on. It doesn't get in your way at all. And with EditShare, I have the ability to keep the older systems like the Media Composers running right along side my newer HD systems."
