NAB Sneak Peak: New Bluefish444 2K/HD/SD 3G SDI Video Cards
Thursday, April 09, 2009
At NAB 2009, Bluefish444 will announce its new cross-platform Create family of 2K/HD/SD 3G SDI uncompressed video cards. This extremely high-quality range of cost-effective PCI Express cards will support Apple Final Cut Studio 2, Adobe Creative Suite 4, Autodesk Combustion and 3ds Max, and Eyeon Fusion. Symmetry, Bluefish444's acquisition, preview and playout software for Windows, will also be included with each Create card.
What differentiates Create video cards from alternative solutions is on-board 12-bit video processing and Sinc(x) hardware scaling that combine to enable real-time format conversion at amazing quality. The 12-bit video processing used throughout the Create cards offers four times the quality of traditional 10-bit pixel depth video processing. This allows for very high-quality color space conversion that is essential for compositors and animators. The hardware-based 25 X 25 tap Sinc(x) scaling algorithm provides for 1/128th sub-pixel scaling accuracy. This scaling algorithm combined with the 12-bit processing enables Create's scaling module to up, down and cross convert between 2K, HD and SD video resolutions in real-time at the highest quality.
The Create family of video cards includes:
Create HD for HD/SD 4:2:2 workflows - $1,795 USD SRP
Create HD is for uncompressed HD/SD digital content creation. It is ideal for connecting digital VTRs, cameras and monitors working in either HD or SD SDI.
Create HD allows for hardware-based, real-time up, down or cross-conversion during capture or playback. The same hardware-based scaler accelerates real time effects within supported NLE applications. Additionally, dual SDI outputs allow for original and converted signals to be output simultaneously.
Create 2K for file-based DI 4:4:4 & 4:2:2 workflows - $2,995 USD SRP
Create 2K is targeted at the file-based workflow of independent filmmaking. Ingested files are edited and previewed within Adobe CS4 or Apple Final Cut Studio as part of an offline workflow. The offline project can then be used to reconform color corrected material and master to SD, HD or 2K resolutions in either single or dual link output modes.
Create 2K has 3 X 1D LUTs on all outputs allowing for calibration of the display device and log/linear conversion.
Create 2K's DVI/HDMI preview output includes a high-quality, hardware-based scaler. The scaler converts the selected input or output to the LCD / Plasma's native resolution and frame rate, bypassing the lower-quality internal scaler of the LCD / Plasma. This provides for low-cost and flexible monitoring within the workflow as a wide range of TFT, Plasma and projectors can be used.
Create 2K incorporates the Create HD feature set and builds upon it by offering dual link output and high-quality DVI / HDMI preview output.
Create 2K Ultra for DI dual link 4:4:4 I/O workflows - $3,495 USD SRP
Create 2K Ultra is aimed at 4:4:4 I/O digital intermediary workflows. Bluefish444 has built its reputation on RGB workflows and Create 2K Ultra brings together Bluefish444's 10 years of expertise in a cost-effective product tightly integrated with Symmetry for Windows DI acquisition, preview and playout.
Create 2K Ultra incorporates the Create HD and Create 2K feature sets and builds upon them by also offering dual link input.

Videoship and Bluefish444 Help NBC News Channel Serve Affiliates
Thursday, April 10, 2008
NBC News Channel is situated in Charlotte, North Carolina and provides 24/7 news services to 300 NBC Affiliate stations located across the U.S. and abroad. Time is of the essence with breaking news, and the News Channel team delivers top stories quickly and efficiently using state of the art technologies.
In August 2007, VideoShip, a privately held Canadian corporation with offices in Atlanta, was awarded the contract to provide system development and support services to News Channel in building their next generation news aggregation and distribution backbone. The new system is powered by NetWave, VideoShip's core Content Delivery Network (CDN) product offering. NetWave is a highly scalable solution that supports the aggregation/delivery of files and live streams concurrently over both terrestrial and satellite networks.
As part of this upgrade, VideoShip worked closely with News Channel staff to select hardware components in replacing aging News Channel servers situated at each Affiliate location. These servers act as repositories for delivered content, and provide a number of facilities to assist with local workflow integration. VideoShip integrated/configured these systems at their Atlanta office, and shipped them to Affiliate locations by December 2007.
A key function of the new system is the ability to ingest and play-out video at Affiliate locations, allowing each site to integrate delivered content into their local workflow, as well as contribute local news stories of their own to News Channel headquarters in Charlotte. Required functionality of the new hardware's integrated video card component included play-out with concurrent dual capture inputs, along with support for both Analog and Digital I/O.
After an extensive evaluation of video cards from multiple vendors, Bluefish444 SD Greed was selected as the most versatile and cost-effective solution for the News Channel deployment. While other vendors offered a 3-card solution, a single SD Greed supports concurrent play-out with dual encoder inputs, and provides the quality and reliability required for this mission-critical application.
During the development and deployment phases, Bluefish444 and VideoShip engineers worked very closely to guarantee tight product integration. Tom Grimes, CEO of VideoShip, states, "Bluefish444 was definitely the right company for us to partner with. They have provided top level support, and have gone to great lengths to ensure the success of this project."
Bob Horner, president of NBC News Channel states, "News Channel prides itself as being an innovator in digital news gathering and distribution. Our new generation system - delivered by VideoShip and its partner Bluefish444 - strengthens our position as the technology leader in our domain."

Hollywood-DI Streamlines Feature Film DI Workflow with Bluefish444
Thursday, September 20, 2007
Hollywood-DI, a boutique post-production facility based in West Hollywood, California, and specializing in digital intermediate (DI) workflows, is using the Bluefish444 HD|Lust video card for its DI feature film projects.
Providing a cost-effective color correction and finishing service for Independent Filmmakers, Hollywood-DI has both an Apple-based workflow via Apple Final Cut Pro and Color, and a DPX based workflow with ASSIMILATE SCRATCH. The QuickTime and DPX workflows all share the same 20TB SAN which allows Hollywood-DI to grade movies in both SCRATCH and Color. Hollywood-DI acquired the HD|Lust to capture HDCAM-SR and HDCAM tapes to DPX or QuickTime. With the HD|Lust, Hollywood-DI has a powerful tool for building its digital workflow. The HD|Lust card streamlines data capture and layback and increases productivity for all of Hollywood-DI's creative and post processes.
Hollywood-DI typically receives work that has been shot on 35mm and scanned to HDCAM-SR tape or which has been shot directly onto HDCAM-SR tape from digital cinema cameras like Sony's F23 or Thompson's Viper. Hollywood-DI is able to ingest with HD|Lust onto the SAN and then grade either via Apple Color or ASSIMILATE SCRATCH.
The HD|Lust is used for input and output. This allows Hollywood-DI to take sequences of DPX from the tape, do the color correction, and then layback out to tape. Hollywood-DI primarily uses the HD|Lust card in conjunction with SCRATCH and Color for capturing, conforming, color grading, and mastering of its projects. Additionally, HD|Lust's ability to capture in native DPX format is a key advantage as Hollywood-DI can share the files with all its departments, especially the VFX artists.
In addition to high-profile features such as 'Superman Returns', Hollywood-DI has used HD|Lust on independent films such as 'Still Green' and 'Dark Streets'. The digital workflow process that Hollywood-DI has created is especially suited to independent filmmakers, who frequently record to HDCAM and HDCAM-SR tapes and who need a cost-efficient method for grading and handling VFX shots on their feature films. With the Apple and Windows-based systems connected to a SAN, Hollywood-DI can offer independent filmmakers and studios high-quality finishing services at a reasonable price point.
Neil Smith, Managing Director of Hollywood-DI, adds, "We've been impressed with both the HD|Lust card and the world-class support provided by Bluefish444. When ingesting 90 minutes (1.5 terabytes) of DPX files, to be able to ingest accurately from an EDL and then layback accurately is critical. The HD|Lust is reliable, accurate and fast. To put it simply, it really works. It is the best card on the market for capturing both 10 bit RGB 4:4:4 and 8 bit 4:2:2 movies." He continues, "We're known for providing high caliber color correction work without breaking the budget, and we continually investigate systems that will allow us to provide the caliber of service our clients have come to expect and as they move forward with new technologies. Bluefish444 has met that need to date and we continue to expect good things from them as we all move forward into the 2K/4K realms."

Bluefish444 Releases Symmetry v3.5 Acquisition, Review, and Playout Software with New ASSIMILATE SCRATCH Integration
Thursday, September 06, 2007
Powerful command line interface increases ease of use and automation in ASSIMILATE SCRATCH and other 3rd-party software applications
Bluefish444 has announced the immediate availability of Symmetry v3.5, its powerful acquisition, review and playout software applications for Windows. Supporting a range of industry-standard file formats, Symmetry gives graphic artists a cost-effective, easy-to-use tool to frame-accurately acquire, review, and playout video projects in YUV or RGB color space. Symmetry supports playlist, clip editing, and EDL import features, alleviating the need to use a complicated NLE package for preview and basic editing processes. Symmetry is bundled free with every Bluefish444 retail video card.
Symmetry v3.5 offers a new command line interface, giving Bluefish444 software development partners the ability to use the core functionality of Symmetry without directly operating Symmetry's user interface. A third-party software application that has engineered support for Symmetry's command line interface is automatically able to capture and playback clips and EDLs from within its own user interface - without operating the Symmetry user interface.
The Symmetry command line interface was developed through close consultation and cooperative engineering with ASSIMILATE. ASSIMILATE's SCRATCH customers are now able to automatically create a CONstruct from captured media through Symmetry, then playback clips from within SCRATCH without having to exit the SCRATCH user interface. Through additional co-engineering between Bluefish444 and ASSIMILATE, SCRATCH customers will also be able to batch capture clips and EDLs and batch export EDLs.
"SCRATCH customers have been using Bluefish444 Symmetry for video ingest and conversion to data and output for quite a while. Bluefish444 has listened to our users and Symmetry v3.5 is a direct example of this," says Jeff Edson, CEO of ASSIMILATE. "Now SCRATCH users can take advantage of the power of Bluefish444 hardware and Symmetry integrated within SCRATCH. This command line ability in Symmetry, with the XML capabilities of SCRATCH, makes for easier implementation and mastering of the workflow."
Symmetry v3.5 is available as a free update to all Bluefish444 video card customers via the Bluefish444 version 5.4.12 installer.

Bluefish444 Adds Autodesk 3ds Max Support
Thursday, June 28, 2007
Bluefish444 has added a range of capabilities directly within Autodesk 3ds Max, taking advantage of HD and SD input and output features. Widely requested by customers, 3ds Max users with Bluefish444 video cards are now able to monitor HD and SD from the 3ds Max render preview. This feature allows 3ds Max artists to preview output in broadcast color space instead of relying solely on VGA monitors which can vary in quality and accuracy.
Highlights
* 3ds Max users can take advantage of HDTV and SDTV broadcast monitoring including automatic preview scaling when the renderer output is different than the output video mode of the Bluefish444 hardware.
* 3ds Max utilizes Bluefish444's on-board keyer (when available) for superimposition of the rendered preview over live video.
* Artists may preview RGB or alpha channel data on a broadcast monitor.
* A frame of a video signal present on the inputs of Bluefish444 hardware may be used as a static texture; grab it to any 3ds Max-supported bitmap format or use it as a Viewport Background for rotoscoping or tracing.
* All Bluefish444 plug-in settings are saved within the 3ds Max project file.
3ds Max support is included as part of Bluefish444's new v5.4.8 installer, freely downloadable from the Bluefish444 web site. The new 3ds Max plug-in is for v8 and v9 of 3ds Max and supports all Bluefish444 video cards.
